In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly upended our lives and no one knew what lay ahead, I set off across America to learn how people were experiencing this unprecedented time. That journey became Who We Are Now, a collection of first-person stories and a book.

Today, another profound change is unfolding. Like COVID-19, artificial intelligence has suddenly become part of our everyday lives, changing how we work, communicate, create, and relate to one another. And, as with the pandemic, we don't know where it's all leading. I'm once again asking questions and listening to Americans describe what they're experiencing while the story is still unfolding.

In 2029–2030, I'll return to the Americans I interviewed during the pandemic to discover how their lives have changed over the decade.
